The national weather agency issued a Fog Advisory that applies to Pickering, Oshawa and southern Durham Wednesday (May 1).
“Near zero visibility in fog is expected or occurring,” Environment Canada said in its advisory for south Durham residents. “Dense fog is affecting areas along the shoreline of western Lake Ontario. Conditions may persist through the morning.”
If travelling, Environment Canada said, “be prepared for areas of near-zero visibility.”
If visibility is reduced while driving, “turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance,” the advisory warns.
The CAA meanwhile, is warning Durham drivers, as the warmer weather approaches, these are unfortunately prime conditions for disaster on the road.
“The weather’s absolutely perfect. The road is dry as a bone. Life is good … so you step on the gas a bit too hard,” the CAA said.
According to Transport Canada, two out of three fatal collisions on Canadian roads happen under these circumstances, the CAA added.
“Moreover, summertime can also mean a sudden downpour, a fog bank appearing out of nowhere, or the blinding glare of the sun on your windshield. In short, the risk of disaster is always there during the warm season,” according to the CAA.
